The Opportunity Project (TOP) is an initiative of the Census Open Innovation Labs at the U.S. Census Bureau that brings together technologists, government, and communities to co-create digital products that serve individuals and communities nationwide. To date, 175+ data-driven digital products have been created, addressing challenges including ocean plastic pollution, economic mobility, youth homelessness, entrepreneurship, and more.

This fall, TOP will focus on the following problem statements:

- Improved Data Access for Local Policymakers

- Improving Access to Capital in Indigenous Communities through Data
- Empowering Communities Through Accessible Crime Data
- Tracking Federal Funding Impact in Puerto Rico
- Minority Financing for Innovation and Technology Transfer
- Reducing the Literacy Gap in Puerto Rico Households

Each year, federal agencies, local governments, and NGOs serve as sprint leaders, identifying high-priority challenges and facilitating 12-week technology development sprints that bring together these cross-sector collaborators. To date, 175+ data-driven digital products have been created, addressing challenges including ocean plastic pollution, economic mobility, youth homelessness, entrepreneurship, and more.
